Kapil Dev Profile

Achievements And Accolades

Kapil Dev, the man who remained India's main strike bowler for almost 15 years, needs no introduction. On many occasions he single-handedly won matches for India and easily became the most popular pin-up boy of the country. For an Indian fast bowler, taking 434 wickets in test cricket is indeed a great achievement. When Kapil was just 20, he set a new record of scoring 1000 runs and taking 100 wickets. He made this record within a period of one year and 109 days only.
Kapil Dev was the man who marshaled his boys to the most famous victory in Indian Cricket- the cricket world cup of 1983. Not only did he jelled the team together but also played the most memorable knock, in the history of the world cup cricket, against Zimbabwe. Kapil came to bat when India were almost out of the match at 17/5. And then he played like God and robbed the match from the opposition. He was rightly named the Wisden International Cricketer of the Year in 1983.

                                Kapil Dev

Kapil Dev - Kapil Dev Although cricket became popular during the British raj but it was largely because of two players that the game became a household name in India in 80's. These two were Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev. Kapil indeed ruled the minds and hearts of an entire generation in the 1980s and the one that followed. Till the rise of Kapil Dev, India was known for deadly spinners and his emergence coincided with the decline of the famous spin quartet of Bedi, Prasanna, Chandrasekhar and S. Venkataraghavan

Kapil Dev was the greatest pace bowler India has produced, and their greatest fast-bowling all rounder. Such was the charisma and stamina of this man that at one point of time he became the highest wicket taker in test and one day cricket. Along with Imran Khan, Ian Botham and Richard Hadlee, Kapil Dev was considered the greatest all rounder of his times.

Pathan Takes Five in India's Victory

Colombo: Irfan got 5 for 25 as Sri Lanka were all out for 120 as India won by 26 runs against Sri Lanka in their opening warm-up match of the World Twenty20 at the P Sara Oval on Saturday

Continuing his fine run, Pathan ripped through the Lankan top order before coming back to dismiss the lower middle order in the end.
The Baroda speedster was ably supported by comeback man Lakshmipathy Balaji, who claimed 3/28.

Set a victory target of 147, Sri Lanka received an early jolt as Pathan castled opener Dilshan Munaweera on the last ball of the first over.

The 27-year-old then dismissed Tillakaratne Dilshan with the last ball of his second over to leave the hosts reeling at 15 for two from the first three overs.
Kumar Sangakkara (32) combined with Angelo Mathews (16) to resurrect the Lankan innings but with Balaji getting better off the later, the target seemed to be a distant one for the hosts.

                                    Achievements & Recognitions

Wisden awarded him with Cricketer of the Year award in the year 1972, and the Best Bowling Performance of the Century award in the year 2002, for his best performance against England at The Oval in the year 1971, where he took 6 wickets for 38 runs.
Batting Nightmare

On the batting front, although, Chandrasekhar really didn’t fare quite well. He had a batting average of 4 runs, and highest percentage of ducks (0 runs) in the history of Cricket with 23 ducks scored by him throughout his career. Interestingly, he also created a world record by scoring less number of runs in his Test Cricket career with 167 runs, than the number of wickets that he took during the period with 242 wickets.

                       Key Bowling Attributes

As a bowler, Chandrasekhar was famous for taking a very long run-up, and used to bowl at medium pace usually. During his career, he played 58 Test Matches and grabbed 242 wickets. He found the Batsman Ken Barrington from England to be the most difficult one to bowl to.

                          Test Cricket Record

Chandrasekhar began his career in Test Cricket in a match played against England at Bombay (now Mumbai) in the year 1964, although he gave his best performance in a match against England played at The Oval Cricket Ground on the 23rd of August 1971. He managed to take 6 wickets for 38 runs in this match, which eventually got India the coveted victory in the Series.
Amazingly, Chandrasekhar was never confident of his bowling and said that he was more likely to deliver a mediocre ball instead of a good one. Still, he was considered to be the most difficult bowler among the Spin Quartet, and helped India see a number of victories in international Cricket.

                                          Early Life

Chandrasekhar was born and brought up in Mysore, a city located in Karnataka. At quite an early age he got attracted towards the game of Cricket. Although nature played a cruel joke with him when his right wrist was badly affected by a Polio attack in his childhood, Chandrasekhar turned this shortcoming into his strong point by using his left arm for bowling that eventually led him to become one of the most successful Leg Spinners in the history of the game.

The Batting Maestro

Azharuddin has been most famous for his wonderful wrist flicks that transformed a Cricket match into a poetic creation with aesthetic nuances of a masterpiece. Eventually, Azharuddin showed the best of his batting capabilities against spin bowlers. In fact, John Woodcock, one of the well known Cricket writers had once quoted that asking an Englishman to bat like Mohammad Azharuddin would be like expecting a greyhound to win the London Derby! His smooth and clean batting style was often compared with the same of David Gower, a batsman from England.

Darker Side of the Story

But as every story has its dark twists, Azharuddin’s life too saw its bad moments. Hansie Croje, the captain of the South African Cricket team who had confessed his role in international match fixing, had taken Azharuddin’s name regarding his involvement in the scandal. Further, Central Bureau of Investigation, the prime investigation agency of India looked into the matter and found Azharuddin guilty of receiving money from bookies to fix Cricket matches. The CBI also found Azharuddin involved in bringing other players along with him into the dirty game, and as a consequence the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) banned Azharuddin from playing Cricket for his lifetime in the year 2000. Ironically, Azharuddin had played 99 Test Cricket matches in his life till then and was on the verge to enter the coveted 100 Test Cricket Club. Although the ban was lifted in the year 2006, he couldn’t make the dream come true.

Political Foray

On the 19th of February 2009, Azharuddin formally joined the Indian National Congress Party. He contested the General Elections 2009 from the Moradabad seat in Uttar Pradesh  and is now a Member of Parliament.

Under the able Captainship of Dhoni, the Indian One Day International (ODI) Cricket team continued to maintain its record of victory. First of all, the team defeated Australia consecutively in 2 final matches of the Commonwealth Bank Series played in March 2008. The series was played between India, Australia and Sri Lanka.                           The Beginning

Dhoni entered the Bihar Cricket team in the year 1998-99, and was further selected for the India-A Cricket team in the year 2004. Later the same year, he made his debut in the National Cricket team of India.
The Charisma Begins
In his 5th One Day International (ODI) Cricket match against Pakistan, Dhoni scored 148 runs which was the biggest score made by an Indian wicketkeeper till then. He managed to accomplish this score just off 123 balls in the match played at Vishakhapatnam on the 5th of April 2005. Later the same year, he scored 183 not out against Sri Lanka in the Bi-lateral One Day International (ODI) Series, outclassing his own record. This match was played at Jaipur and India had to outsmart a huge 299 runs score set by the Sri Lankans. Dhoni got India this great victory with his wonderful 183 runs within just 145 balls. This score set a yet another record for being the highest score made in the second innings of a One Day International (ODI) Cricket match, and still lies unbeaten by any other batsman. At the end of the Series, Dhoni finished with highest total score of 346 runs and grabbed the coveted Man of the Series award.
He scored good number of runs in a consistent manner for a period of time, and soon grabbed the No. 1 position in the One Day International (ODI) Cricket rankings issued by International Cricket Council (ICC) in the year 2005-06.

Rahul Dravid:

If you are a fan of Indian cricket team then you should agree with me regarding the inclusion of Rahul Dravid in the list of best Indian cricketers of all time. He has all the qualities to be in the list. Rahul Dravid who is widely called “The Wall of Indian cricket” for his passionate batting style is considered as the last classical batsman. In his cricket career, he has achieved many records. He is the third highest Test run scorer after Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting. He is the second Indian batsman to have scored more than 12000 runs in International cricket. He has also more than 10000 runs in ODI cricket.

He has the record of having taken the highest number of catches in Test cricket. He took more than 200 catches and surpassed the Australian legend Mark Waugh. In 2000, he was included as one of the top-five Wisden Cricketers of the Year. In 2004, in the inaugural award ceremony ICC awarded him the ICC Player of the Year and the Test Player of the Year.

On 9 March 2012, this passionate cricketer announced his retirement from all forms of cricket game with the BCCI president, N Srinivasan and former captain Anil Kumble at a press conference in Bangalore.
It would be hard for Indian selectors to get someone who could fill up the game in the national team.

Anil Kumble:

Anil Kumble is regarded as one of the greatest Indian cricketers. This right-arm leg spin bowler is still the leading wicket-taker for India in both Test and one-day international. Of all bowlers, he is the third highest wicket taker after Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne in Test cricket. He is one of only three bowlers who have taken more than 600 Test wickets in the oldest format of cricket game.

Playing 132 Tests, he took 619 wickets. He is one of the two bowlers to have taken ten wickets in an innings. He claimed this rare achievement against Pakistan in the second Test played in Delhi between 4 and 8 February 1999. He got 337 wickets in 271 ODI matches.

He guided Indian cricket team for few home and away series. He got the Test captaincy on November 2007 and succeeded Rahul Dravid. His captaincy was the combination of both success and failure. He announced his retirement from cricket on 2 November 2008. In 2005, Indian government honoured him with Padma Shri award, the fourth highest civilian honour, for his contribution to Indian cricket for 18 years.

                                    Kapil Dev:

Former Indian captain, Kapil Dev, should be considered not only as one of the best cricketers but also the best captains in the history of Indian cricket. He successfully led his team to a first World Cup victory in 1983 where they defeated West Indies by 43 runs at Lord's, London. The well-known cricket magazine, Wisden, named him as the Indian Cricketer of the Century in 2002. Not only that but also he was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame on 8 March 2010.

Kapil Dev was a good all rounder. Since making his Test debut in 1978, he played 131 matches and scored 5248 runs at an average of 31.05 with the career best of 163. With the ball, he took 434 and became the highest wicket taker before it was broken by Courtney Walsh in 2000. Till then, he was India’s highest wicket taker in both major forms of cricket, Test and ODI.

He is the only player who has taken more than 400 wickets and more than 5000 runs in Test cricket. This performance made him one of the greatest all-rounders to have played the game. After him, we cannot find anyone who can touch or break his record set as an all-rounder

                               Sunil Gavaskar:

Sunil Gavaskar is undoubtedly one of the greatest players in the history of cricket game. This former Indian cricketer is considered as one of the greatest opening batsmen in cricket history. He made his international debut in 1971 and played cricket for sixteen years. In his career, he has achieved many records including the most Test runs and most Test centuries scored by any batsman. His record of 34 Test centuries was unbroken for almost two decades until it was broken by Sachin Tendulkar in December 2005.
He is the first player who has scored more than 10,000 runs in Test cricket. Playing 125 Test matches, he has scored 10122 runs with an average of 51.12 with a career best of unbeaten 236 runs. Since making his ODI debut in 1974, he played 108 matches and scored 3092 runs with an average of 35.13.
He scored just one century in ODI format of cricket game.

Sunil Gavaskar was well known for his batting style against fast bowling. He will be memorable for his unbeaten 103 performance in 1983 World Cup which India won. He was not a good captain and under his captaincy India went 31 matches without a victory.

Sachin Tendulkar:

It is hard to find anyone who hasn’t heard the name of this legendary player. Sachin Tendulkar who is affectionately called Little Master by his fans is widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen of all time. The 39-year-old Tendulkar made his international debut in 1989 and still continue playing cricket. In his twenty-two years of cricket career, he has achieved many records in both Test and one-day international cricket. He is the highest run scorer and highest centurion in both format of the cricket game. So far he has scored 15470 runs in Test and 18426 runs in ODI respectively. He is the only player to reach the milestone of scoring a hundred centuries, including 51 centuries in Test and 49 centuries in ODI. He is also the only player to score fifty centuries in Test cricket.

He is the first player to have scored double century in ODI cricket. He is also the first player to cross 10000 runs in one day cricket.

Sachin Tendulkar is called the God of cricket. For his batting technique, he is compared with another legend cricketer, Sir Don Bradman. He was the member of 2011 ICC World Cup winning team.
Indian government honoured him with the Padma Vibhushan award, India's second highest civilian award, and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, India's highest sporting honour. Currently, he has been nominated for receiving the Bharat Ratna award.

Besides playing cricket he is involved in some social activities. He helps many charity organizations. He is a passionate follower of Sathya Sai Baba of Puttaparthi.

Wasim Akram (Punjabi, Urdu: وسیم اکرم; born 3 June 1966) is a former Pakistani left arm fast bowler and left handed batsman in cricket, who represented the Pakistan national cricket team in Test cricket and One Day International matches.
Akram is regarded as one of the best fast bowlers in cricket. He holds the world record for most wickets in List A cricket with 881 and is second only to Sri Lankan off-spin bowler, Muttiah Muralitharan in terms of One Day International wickets with 502. He is considered to be one of the founders and perhaps the finest exponent of reverse swing bowling.[1][2][3] The revolutionary nature of reverse swing initially resulted in accusations of ball tampering by cricket critics, although the skill of the reverse swing delivery has now been accepted as a legitimate features of ability in cricket. Akram's later career was also tarnished with accusations of match fixing by critics, although these remain unproven.
On 30 September 2009, Akram was one of five new members inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame.
